Instrumentation Technician

Context & Job description

As part of a small specialised team, your principal mission will be to assist in the manufacturing activities of the Crystal Analyser Laboratory. As a skilled technician with a background in experimental physics, materials science or microelectronics processing, your missions will be the following:

  • Manufacture crystal analysers and associated X-ray optics
  • Participate in the maintenance and calibration of processing tools
  • Document and archive information
  • Measure the surface topography of optical components
  • Manage stocks of raw materials and consumables
  • Work the majority of the time in a clean room environment and to assist with the coordination of the clean room operation
  • Propose improvements of exisitng techniques and participate in the development of new methods
  • Assist in other X-ray Optics Group activities when required
  • Your duties will require you to work routinely in a clean-room environment whilst adhering to corresponding work practices. The post includes manipulation of fragile optical components.

    Expected profile

  • Technician degree (BSc, Licence, HND, HNC, BTS, DUT, Bachelor, Meister, Vordiplom, Perito, Laurea Triennale, Diplomatura, Ingenieria Técnica or equivalent) in physics, chemistry, materials sciences, microelectronics processing or a related subject
  • Any previous experience in machining and processing, polishing and/or the use of vacuum systems will be considered a strong asset. However, we encourage beginners to apply
  • Practical knowledge of the machining (grinding, dicing, bonding) and optical polishing of brittle materials such as silicon as well as the use of vacuum systems are desirable
  • Manual skills and meticulous attention to detail are essential in this work environment
  • Ability to handle high value, fragile optical components
  • Management of stocks of raw materials and consumables
  • Familiarity with working in a clean-room environment
  • Basic knowledge of standard computing tools such as Microsoft Office
  • An interest in improving existing manufacturing methods and exploring new processes for crystal analyser production
  • Ability to quickly understand technical requirements
  • Initiative, Communication, team spirit, methodical, organised
  • You should be an effective team worker practiced in trouble-shooting and capable of managing your time to conduct several tasks in parallel
  • Proficiency in English (spoken and written) is required (working language at the ESRF)
  • Working conditions

    Permanent position.

    Your duties will require you to work routinely in a clean-room environment whilst adhering to corresponding work practices. The post includes manipulation of fragile optical components.

    The salary will be calculated on the basis of relevant qualifications and professional experience.
